The Olympic Elk

Release Date: February 13, 1952

Watch Date: June 8, 2023

“Join the majestic Olympic elk as they traverse the alpine path from their winter home in the lowland shadow of Washington’s Mount Olympus, to the fertile grazing grounds of its towering peaks. While new mothers do their best to protect their young from roaming predators, young bulls challenge stalwart elders for the right to collect a family of their own.”

Disney! How did you pull this one out? I was starting to think it might not be possible from a True-Life Adventure, and yet somehow, in the eleventh hour, you managed it. Now there’s still another short and one more feature length film that might ruin it, but this one, this one was so good.

Now a lot of this footage was shot at a distance because elks are dangerous, and they spook easy. So this film could have benefited from modern camera technology and our incredible ability to zoom in and maintain high definition.

Still, this short was informative, entertaining, and, at times, cute. It took place in my neck of the woods, though I don’t live in the Olympic Peninsula Bob and I are just North of it, and I like a movie that showcases the beauty of the nature from my small corner of the world. It kept us engaged and talking, about the subject and not about our day – for the first time since we resumed our regular viewing schedule this month.

Bob was equally impressed and announced that it might be one of his favorite True-Life Adventures thus far, and I have to agree. I keep scouring my brain for words to describe why this movie hit the way it did, but it seems to defy explanation really. It was just very good, and I highly recommend it.
