The Incredible Journey

Release Date: November 20, 1963

Watch Date: March 15 – March 18, 2024

“Experience an amazing adventure when three ordinary pets take on the majestic Canadian wilderness in an extraordinary journey. Finding themselves separated from their owners by 200 miles, they set out on a perilous trek to find their family…and home. Led by instinct, the trio-a young retriever, an old bull terrier and a self-sufficient Siamese cat-face hunger, a dangerous bear, rushing rivers and much more along the way. But these three unlikely friends soldier on, protecting and caring for one another in one of the most incredible journeys ever.”

   I don’t like this movie.

I don’t like the 90s remake, I’m sure I won’t like the 90s remakes sequel. I don’t like the concept of domesticated animals, pets, trying to survive in the wilderness and I absolutely don’t like watching actual animals be terrified and hurt.

   Because that’s what happens.

The cat being scared about a lynx or a bear? That’s not acting. Cats don’t act. That is a cat being legitimately terrified about a lynx and a bear.

The dog with porcupine quills in his muzzle? Again, not acting. That’s an actual injured animal.

And that poor cat being submerged in water and trying to survive in literal rapids? That’s actually happening too.

   And it’s awful.

If you can’t do these kind of things safely, and you can’t, don’t make the movie. I don’t care how interesting the story is – it’s not heartwarming when I know animals are terrified and hurt. And you can’t control how a lynx or a bear is going to react, no matter how well trained they are. Especially in the case of the lynx, because it does bat at that cat, it does chase that cat, and the cat doesn’t know any different from acting or real life running for it’s life.

   It’s unpleasant and uncomfortable.

I don’t want to say anything else about it really. The plot doesn’t matter. The cinematography doesn’t matter. This movie makes me sad and mad, and I’ll be more than happy to never watch it again.
