Kingsman: The Secret Service

Release Date: February 13, 2015

Watch Date: March 31 – April 1, 2024

“A super-secret organization recruits an unrefined but promising street kid into the agency’s ultra-competitive training program just as a dire global threat emerges from a twisted tech genius. A phenomenal cast, including Colin Firth, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Caine, lead this action-packed spy-thriller directed by Matthew Vaught (X:Men: First Class).”

About half-way through this movie Bob looked over to me and stated “You like this movie?”

Now, to clarify, Bob was surprised because this is a bad movie – it’s not. It’s just very violent, and can be quite gory, and neither of those things are usually my preference in films.

And he’s right, they’re not. But there’s exceptions to every rule, and Kingsman is one of my exceptions.

This movie is a modern day take on the classic James Bond film, before all those films got way too serious for their own good. It’s fun. The villain is ridiculous. The spy-system and their technology is impossible and crazy. The jokes come fast and hard. The action is incredibly choreographed – you know exactly whose neck is being broken at all times. The pacing is incredible, it doesn’t let up.

Still, it deals with tough topics. Choices about your morals. The dangers of climate change, and how screwed we may be on that topic. Domestic abuse. Classism.

I will watch this movie any day of the week, when the kids aren’t home, and I’ll watch it repeatedly. I love every second of it. Maybe it’s because it’s cinematic junk food, maybe there’s a lot going on under the surface that I simply can’t put into words. It doesn’t matter. I love this film.

What a great to start to my birthday month!
