“A teenage Peter Parker grapples with both high school and amazing super-human crises as his alter-ego Spider-Man.”
This is the Spider-Man I feel the least connection too. It’s not the 2nd Gen Spider-Man’s fault, not really. It’s the fact that I watched this film when I was too old and I was too connected to Tobey Maguire. And then, later, because of the Avengers, and his built in stories within the MCU which I already loved I would become very attached to Tom Holland. So Andrew Garfield just has not emotionally made the cut.
That’s not to say he’s bad. He’s not. He’s excellent. I loved him in Tammy Faye. He’s a fantastic actor. He’s just not my Spider-Man.
I do think that this movie has a lot better writing than the original trilogy. And I think the characters are better, and that the super villain is more believable, and more sympathetic. I like the romance better. Gwen has never annoyed me as much as Mary Jane. I wish this version of Peter had other friends. Even if there is a risk that they might turn in to Hobgoblins or something.
I also think it’s a smart decision to not make Norman Osborne the immediate villain. The Green Goblin is a pretty intense and major villain, and it’s probably best to not use him the very first film. Kind of gives you no where to go but down.
It was fun, and the kids loved it, despite the fact that they needed constant reassurance that Spider-Man wasn’t going to die. And then reassurance that I had, in fact, seen all the Spider-Man movies and knew that Spider-Man wasn’t going to die. Which is a lie, I haven’t seen the second Andrew Garfield movie at all. But, I’m still pretty sure Spider-Man doesn’t die in that too.
So, ultimately, a fun film for the whole family.
It’s the end of Avenger’s August! And we actually managed to watch an Avenger’s movie, which is, honestly more than I expected. Now, the ultimate question is…will we be seeing a repeat of Superhero September? And the answer is: I don’t know. I really don’t. I do know that for this month, instead of doing personal picks for the last ten days of a month, we’ll be doing our personal picks for the first ten days of month. It’s just a necessary schedule thing, works out better for us. So I don’t think we’ll officially decide which whether we’re done with Marvel for the year or not.
