Snow White (Live Action)

Release Date: March 21, 2025

Watch Date: June 14, 2025

“Disney’s ‘Snow White’ is a vibrant live-action musical reimagining of Walt Disney’s groundbreaking full-length animated classic. Experience the timeless adventure as Snow White journeys into magical woods to escape her stepmother, the Evil Queen, and meets the beloved Bashful, Sleepy, Sneezy, Happy, Dopey, Grumpy and Doc who join her quest to restore the kingdom and bring kindness to the land.”

I was prepared to hate this movie, I really was. But I also prepared to watch it as soon as it showed up on Disney+ because our daughter loves Snow White, which makes no sense to me because all she’s ever seen is ads for this film and the one time I tried to get her to watch the original she lost interest very quickly, and to be honest, she lost interest in this film very quickly and writing this nearly a month out from our original viewing she doesn’t even remember that she watched it.

But I didn’t hate it. Not really.

Okay, I didn’t like the additional songs. Except maybe ‘Waiting on a Wish’, that wasn’t terrible? And ‘Princess Problems’ was actually kind of funny. I didn’t mind the backstory into Snow White’s life, and what the kingdom was like before the Evil Queen appeared. And I didn’t like that the ‘rebellion’ of the kingdom against the Queen lasted all of about five seconds and mostly involved people singing. I also didn’t like the change to Prince Charming, who had no real chemistry with Snow White at all.

But I did laugh at multiple points, and despite the fact that Bob and I had planned a task to accomplish in the same room so that we wouldn’t have to focus on what is being called a terrible movie by most critics and the public alike, I kept finding my attention drawn to it. But it was a weird feeling because I didn’t want to have it taking up my attention, and I didn’t want to be laughing at it.

So was that peer pressure? An expectation I had set, or is it a genuinely bad movie? I couldn’t really tell you. I don’t think the live action films are doing what they used to do, which was at least adding some extra depth to the plots. I’m not a fan of the live actions, but at least when they first started it felt like they were trying. This just feels like a cheap cash grab to keep being able to license characters and stories. And I have a feeling we’re going to keep going down this road for a long time.

I’m going to choose to look at this as a positive. A Disney Princess who doesn’t get a lot of attention beyond the acknowledgement that she is ‘the first’ is now the only princess my daughter wants to dress up as, nearly 100 years after her original release. And there’s something kind of cool about that.

  1. Snow White- here’s what I was thinking? The animated and live action are two totally different stories. I liked Dopey better when we didn’t talk- he had more personality that way
